Discovering Culinary Delights in the Catskills: A Weekend Getaway Guide

· 5 min read

Charting a Culinary Journey in the Catskills

The Catskills might conjure visions of tranquil retreats and breathtaking views for many, but to me, they represent something even more appetizing—a culinary adventure. Growing up near the Rocky Mountains, I’ve always had a love for nature, and after spending a summer in Brooklyn, I've discovered a delightful counterpoint to the city bustle within upstate New York. My partner’s family has a cabin in Accord, and it’s been my refuge from the urban grind. Each weekend spent there has deepened my appreciation for the region's diverse offerings, particularly in dining. When I excitedly share my upstate trips with city dwellers, their reactions often reveal a surprise at my focus on the thriving restaurant scene. Sure, you could spend your trip simply cooking with the fruits and vegetables harvested from local farm stands, and you’d be perfectly content. But I’d advocate for those who appreciate good food to plan a culinary getaway. Let’s dive into a weekend itinerary that places food front and center.

Friday: The Journey Begins

If you’re driving up from New York City, you’ve got a couple of transportation options—take the bus, hop on a train, or, like me, hit the road with a car rental from New Jersey. A tip before you embark: grab some of Corner Slice’s garlic knots for an unleashing pre-trip snack—you won’t regret it.

Lunch at Storm King Art Center

Once you arrive, head over to the Storm King Art Center. When there, not only can you immerse yourself in beautiful outdoor art, but picnic dining is also allowed—an excellent excuse to pack your own meal and enjoy it amongst the sculptures. That being said, the center often hosts concerts as well— I caught Dev Hynes’ mesmerizing performance over the summer, one I won’t soon forget. Just a note: while museum eateries have improved, I'd argue that enjoying your lunch on the grass is infinitely more appealing.

Dinner in New Paltz

Next up, drive a little further north to New Paltz, where you can savor the playful offerings at Shorties. This unique dining spot features DJs and gaming alongside a menu that delights. I love their kimchi-topped hot dogs, but you won’t want to miss other enjoyable options like togarashi wings or prosciutto nachos. If you’re keen on shaking things up, don’t overlook their creative non-alcoholic beverages that bring fresh ingredients to life. Planning to cook during your stay? A pitstop at Gadaleto’s for top-notch seafood supplies is a great way to wrap up the day.

Evening Indulgences

After dinner, explore the lodging options in Accord that suit various tastes—from cozy cabins to retro motels, or even the upscale hotel Inness. The outdoor bar there offers stunning views, making it a perfect place to unwind with friends. An alternative means scoring a cozy night in is visiting Bluebird Wine Shop for a selection of natural wines, or add sweetness to your stay by picking up a dessert treat from the charming Accord Market, known for its delectable offerings.

This trip promises not just fantastic views but a tapestry of flavors that tell the story of the Catskills. If you’re a food enthusiast, prepare for a memorable experience that extends beyond the typical tourist fare. Stay tuned as we unravel the next day’s adventures and offerings.

Exploring Culinary Treasures

As we wrap up our food journey, it’s clear that there’s an abundance of culinary delights waiting to be uncovered. Take Harana Market, for instance. This establishment, which is renowned for serving some of the best Filipino cuisine in the U.S., has transitioned away from a traditional dining room setup. Instead, keep an eye out for their pop-ups and takeaway options, or arrange for catering if you're gathering a crowd. Eng's Chinese in Kingston is another gem; with its rich local history, this restaurant offers a unique takeout experience that leaves you wanting more, especially with plans to visit its dining space soon. And then there’s Café Mutton in Hudson, where a head cheese sandwich left a lasting impression on my taste buds. If wine tickles your fancy, Kingston Wine Co. has an impressive selection that stands out in the state, while Mirador, also located in Kingston, is the perfect spot for enjoying sherry and pintxos. I'm particularly eager to explore the Oaxacan food offerings in Poughkeepsie, which promise to expand the palate further.
